Know your Governing document

90 minute workshop – FREE to all BAVO members

Thursday 12 November 2020 from 10am-11.30am on  ‘Zoom’

(We can help you to use ‘Zoom’ – just let us know if you need any help).

This interactive and enjoyable workshop is for committee members/trustees/directors of voluntary, community and charity organisations.

Whether you’re an aspiring trustee, a  new trustee or an experienced, long-standing committee member/trustee of a voluntary, community group or charity, this workshop will be of interest to you.

All  Trustees need to update, develop and refresh their knowledge and awareness from time to time and there are lots of new developments in the world of charity governance right now. Trustees who keep themselves informed tend to excel in the role, following through on their duty and leading by example!

When did you last read your organisation’s governing document*? (*sometimes called a Constitution, Memorandum and articles of association, Rules or Trust deed). Some governing documents can be long, and difficult to understand, but essentially it sets out a group’s purpose and how it has to be run.  Charities are legally required to comply with their governing document.

This session will help you to understand what a governing document is all about, and confidently and effectively make the best use of it. Knowledge is power!  For example, do you know what your governing document says about how to run an AGM online if you can’t meet together? Do you even have the powers to do that or will your meeting be null and void?

If you’re an aspiring or new trustee, you need to be clear about the aims and objectives of the charity you’re joining. For existing trustees,  understanding your governing document fully will ensure you are running your organisation properly and in doing so, this helps to protect you as a  committee member (legally known as a Trustee) from liability.  Fear not, this session answer your questions and  demystify it for you!
