Community Companions

Community Companions is a free, confidential, and non-judgemental befriending service supporting people across Bridgend County Borough.

We offer flexible support to those who are isolated, housebound, or simply in need of human connection. While we’re not a replacement for professional care, we work alongside other services to enhance the support already in place. Please note, our volunteers cannot provide medical, personal, or domestic care.

Referrals are welcome from individuals, carers, or professionals. Self-referrals are also accepted. Please email Abijenkins@bavo.org.uk for information on referral criteria. Due to high demand, waiting times may apply as we continue to recruit volunteers.

What we offer:

  • Friendly face-to-face or telephone companionship

  • Help easing anxiety, loneliness, and uncertainty

  • Support to attend local cafés or community activities

  • Encouragement to reconnect with community life

  • Boosting confidence, wellbeing, and social connections

  • Local volunteers who understand and value the area

  • Signposting to appropriate services when needed

We provide a warm, informal approach that’s especially helpful for those hesitant to seek formal support.

Beryl & Melissa’s Story

After losing her husband, and with family living far away, 95 year old Beryl was left feeling lonely and isolated from her community.
To help, Beryl was paired up with Melissa, a volunteer befriender at BAVO – check out their story below 👇🎬

Who can refer?

Anyone supporting someone who may need a little extra companionship or support can make a referral. This includes health professionals such as GPs, occupational therapists, social workers, and district nurses, as well as housing associations, voluntary organisations, family members, and friends. We also welcome self-referrals.

You can find more information on referrals here.
