The High Sheriff of Mid Glamorgan Youth Community Awards were set up in 2008 when finance was pledged by local firms, organisations and individuals in the county to support young people who were volunteering.

The idea behind the scheme is to encourage community spirit and financially reward individuals and groups who have shown commitment and given of their time and effort, taking part in initiatives which stand out as being over and above what could normally be expected.
