'Strengthening 3rd sector skills'

BAVO is working in partnership with Swansea CVS and Neath Port Talbot CVS to strengthen third sector governance and skills development, such as recruiting and matching skilled peer mentors from public, private and independent sectors with third sector organisations.

Funded by The National Lottery Community Fund, our project operates across the local authority areas of Bridgend, Neath Port Talbot, and Swansea. It aims to strengthen governance and develop skills across the voluntary sector and community organisations (the 'third sector') through the recruitment of skilled volunteer mentors and trustees (the people who oversee the running of a voluntary organisation).

What are the benefits of getting involved?

As a volunteer with our project, you can:

  • help build your CV;

  • gain experience for future jobs;

  • help your community become a better place to live;

  • develop or expand your business management skills;

  • develop your strategic planning knowledge and expertise;

  • build your network;

  • make new friends;

  • receive free induction training on being a trustee, safeguarding and the voluntary sector (for young people, this training is accredited and contributes to Welsh Bac etc).

There are various ways that you can get involved in the project:

The project needs volunteers with skills and experience in running effective organisations  and who are interested in working with individuals or a voluntary or community group in the Bridgend, Neath Port Talbot,  or Swansea area to mentor and support them. 

This could be with a specific issue or to help them further develop the skills and confidence needed to lead, manage and govern all aspects of their organisation effectively.  We provide training for volunteer mentors and an informal support network.

Trustees are sometimes known as Board members or Committee members.  Their role is to make sure  their voluntary organisation or community group has a clear strategy, and that its work and goals are in line with its vision. Being a trustee can be very rewarding.

As a trustee you have the chance to support and shape the work and strategic direction of an organisation, and you can make a significant difference to a cause that matters to you. You are part of a team and will have the opportunity to apply your unique skills and experience while learning from others.

Working closely with a passionate team of people who have different perspectives is often one of the most enjoyable aspects of the role. Link Up is supporting more young people aged 15-25 and women to get involved as trustees.

As a VOLUNTARY OR COMMUNITY ORGANISATION in the Bridgend County Borough area...
We are looking for voluntary and community organisations in the area who would like some help from Link Up. We can :

  • help your existing management board  or committee to gain better understanding of their roles and responsibilities;

  • support you with training and resources to help with induction of new board members and development of your board members more generally and help you to find new people to provide support for your board and make it stronger; 

  • assist your board to plan for the future, to write the plans you need to move forward and support you to put them into practice;

  • put your organisation in touch with others in the area who are facing similar challenges  so that you can help each other to work out solutions.

By telling other people about the project....
You probably know someone who would be a great volunteer; either as a mentor or trustee. You may also know someone who is already involved with a community group. 

Please tell them about the Link Up Project. This could be a great opportunity for them!

Every month...

Monthly cuppa and chat session for trustees and committee members
First Thursday of each month from 10.30 – 11.30am

Every month we host an informal get-togetrher for trustees to sare their thoughts and concerns with each other and to discuss possible ways foreward. Mentors from the Link Up Project whoi have a range of different business skills will also be present.

Trustees find our sessions really helful and supportive to share their concerns about emerging from lockdown into “new normal” and to learn from each others’ experiences and knowledge.  

We know trustees are continuing to wonder about questions such as:  

  • How can we provide our services to the community in a safe way in future?
  • How can we risk assess our premises?
  • How will we be able to operate and maintain social distancing in the premises we use?
  • What about cleaning?
  • Do we have enough staff / volunteers to operate the services we need to provide?
  • Will our existing business plan take us through the next year ok or will we need to adapt it?
  • What impact has lockdown had on our financial plan and do we need to adapt it?
  • How can we use technology to help us move forward during the next few months?
  • Do we have the equipment and /or the skills?

Our sessions, are hosted using Zoom. It's very simple to use; all you need to join in is a smartphone, tablet, laptop or pc with camera. You need to provide your own tea or coffee!!
