Since initially achieving the Gold Award standard in 2015, we have continued to be an organisation where health and wellbeing has become embedded and integrated into our organisation’s culture.

Healthy Working Wales is a Welsh Government scheme run by Public Health Wales which offers free help and support to any business with a base in Wales. The Healthy Working Wales awards programme recognises businesses that look after the health and wellbeing of their employees. Businesses that achieve these awards have demonstrated that they meet national quality standards for workplace health.

Our staff feels valued within their own working environment and are aware of their responsibilities for their own health, giving them the drive to do better for themselves. They realise the importance of healthy eating and taking exercise including running, walking during lunch hours and swimming.  They enjoy training sessions on health and take part in a number of team challenges around physical activity and healthy eating including an informal weight loss group encouraging each other in their efforts to lose weight with very encouraging results.

Working within an enabling and encouraging environment has had a direct impact on our staff’s mental and emotional wellbeing, resulting in all staff leading group activities which has aided BAVO in achieving gold again.

As part of our staff development and wellbeing programme, our BAVO team took some time out together in July to explore the beautiful Spirit of Llynfi Woodland. This community woodland is situated on the eastern slopes of the Upper Llynfi on the site of the former Coegnant Colliery and Maesteg Washery.

Our wellbeing walk was guided by our Finance Officer Kathryn Jones, who also volunteers in this local community woodland. We enjoyed time out in nature together, counting butterflies, watching Red Kites, finding wildflowers and the ‘Keeper of the Colliery’ oak sculpture of a miner, which celebrates the lives of the hundreds of miners who once worked throughout the Llynfi Valley.

BAVO’s Chief Executive, Heidi Bennett commented: “BAVO is very proactive within the workplace and the local community as keen promoters of good health and wellbeing.  It’s important for us to ensure our staff feels valued and happy in their working environment.

“We are absolutely delighted that we have retained this quality mark which recognises the benefits of our healthy workplace initiatives on our staff’s wellbeing. We would recommend any small organisation to consider taking up the challenge!”
