'Building Caring Communities' is a process to help communities become stronger and to improve the well-being of all citizens. It identifies the things that make communities and individuals strong and encourages communities to focus on factors that promote health and well-being”
Often when looking at creating caring communities and reducing social isolation and loneliness we are referring to supporting older people. Yes, older people can be most susceptible to loneliness and isolation within the community. Interestingly, did you know that young people in Wales are more likely to be lonely and isolated than older people… Veteran’s have a career surrounded by brothers and sisters at arms yet when they leave it can be a very different story. Carers can become marginalised because of fulfilling their caring role.
It doesn’t end there. Loneliness and isolation can impact on anybody’s life. Our marginalised communities could be based on health (mental health, physical disability, learning disability etc), population profile (gender, age, sexuality, ethnicity, financial etc). What this goes to show is everyone has a role within caring communities as a beneficiary or as a provider. How do we, collectively help facilitate bringing communities closer?
As such, we need to consider how we are supporting our communities to help us identify what gaps are out there.
- Let us share all the incredible things that you are doing to address loneliness and isolation;
- Hear from Welsh Government plans through their national consultation on Loneliness and isolation.
