Welcome to our autumn edition, a time when our local sector is already starting its planning for next year. A period which sees an influx of enquiries for funding searches and support with applications into BAVO.

‘Strategic’ and ‘Sustainable’ are words we hear regularly in partnership meetings however, a number of key local grant schemes have only notified funding into the sector six months into the financial year. The sector always struggled with annual funding agreements and have advocated for more long term funding arrangements for years, however we hear from members that the opposite is occurring. We will be monitoring this trend and raising the issue with WCVA, local politicians and Welsh Government on your behalf.

Those that attended our AGM will recall we hosted a ‘conversation with...’ session over afternoon tea. Pages 4 and 5 give an overview of what you told us was important to you as members and we have outlined our response. Your views were fed into our strategic development sessions with our Board, staff and partners, and a range of chargeable services have now been outlined.

We are delighted to already be a provider of consultancy services to Wales Coop Centre clients under their Social Business Wales Programme and we were recently contracted by a UK Funding Trust to support groups to prepare local bids to their scheme and maximise investment for local services. So, if you are a Trustee Board concerned about any of the areas listed below, or feel that your staff and volunteers need some extra support whether it be because of lack of time, capacity or anything else – please get in touch for a chat.

Equally if you are a manager of a group/charity and you are feeling over stretched and just skimming the surface to keep afloat, then give us a ring for a quote, we offer confidential services that are tailored to meet your needs and budget.

page 4 of newsletterWe have a team of experienced and specialist officers and consultants who can take the burden off you and do it for you, not just give advice. We can review all aspects of your compliance with legal and governance issues, e.g. policy development, HR, health and safety and quality assurance.

We can also support operational activity through planning, budgeting, bid writing/fundraising, project start up, PR and marketing through to evaluation and reporting finance and outcomes. We can also at times provide on site interim management services and consultancy.

We have been setting up a new project in collaboration with Swansea CVS and Neath Port Talbot CVS which will focus on expanding our local volunteer base and connecting with private sector mentors. So many organisations need additional Board members and Volunteers, so if you have skills and/or time to offer, please ring today! We are also working with Neath Port Talbot CVS on local befriending schemes, we desperately need more volunteers. Both of these projects are funded by The Big Lottery Fund in Wales. In collaboration with V2C and Awen, we are developing projects that tackle digital exclusion in the county borough and we continue to receive the support of ABMU, Public Health Wales and members on the Llynfi Valley 20 work.BAVO newsletter training page

I am also excited to announce a new project marking '70 years of the NHS' working in partnership with the University of Manchester and Peoples Voice media. BAVO is the only Welsh partner to this project at the moment and we are looking for people who are interested in documenting history and receive free training to become 'Oral historians'. We are also looking for young people to train up to film 'digital' stories this autumn. Interested? Give Sharon/Geraint a ring on 01656 660372.

During all this activity, we are also sure not to let the quality of our activity slip and we were re-awarded the ‘Investors in Volunteers’ quality mark, which we are very proud of!

So all in all, it has been a very busy few months and I am very grateful to the BAVO team, our partners, volunteers and members who supported us through this time!
